About

Philosophically, I am concerned with three things: freedom, justice, and equality. I see those three things manifesting themselves in the three jobs I feel I am missioned to perform as father, educator, and writer. I believe the thread between those philosophies and jobs is righteousness. So, all in all, I am trying to be the most authentic person I can be in all the capacities and roles I find myself fulfilling, whether they be on personal or professional levels; my goal is to be the same individual in any arena I step in. Additionally, I understand I am destined to be the village idiot. With that being said, I am comfortable, though not satisfied, in the constant states of unrest I find myself, professionally and personally; the Myth of Sisyphus and DuBois’ Double Consciousness are doctrines and states of mind which push me forward, upward, onward, over and over and over again. This is what I am about in an existential nutshell.

  1. Beautifully done intro, Mark. I’m in on the project. It’s your passionate levelheadedness that sets you apart, if that makes sense, your direct subtlety, your nuanced frankness. And by setting you apart, I mean from all the thinkers and writers, not any particular (read “ethnic”; read “teachers lounge compliment”) ones. Your difference is righteous, and I look forward to following your thoughts, adventures and whatever you feel like sharing on “The Black Man on Campus.”

(Love your tip of the hat to DuBois and confession of living his Double Consciousness.)

    • Thanks, Steve. Just trying to read between the lines of things. When I had your class, and when you came out to my class, the one thing that really resonated with me was, writers write about one thing. I find that as I write and work with ideas, all roads lead to my “one” place.
